In Filth the tapeworm serves as the thematization of two separate but interconnected psychological phenomena with respect to the protagonist. On the one hand, the tapeworm signifies the fragmentation of the ego through the strengthened authority of the unconscious, on the other hand, it serves as the representation of the disintegration of the self, due to the Bruce Robertson’s expulsion from society.
