Absztrakt

My theme concentrates on the evolution of the American image that allured these people overseas and its impact on the formation of the Hungarian immigrants’ image. Also an emphasis will be placed on the psychological effects of immigration on the Hungarians who left Hungary from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century. My objective is to compare the different groups of immigrants’ image in the United States and at the same time represent the formation of their self-image as Hungarian-Americans under the given circumstances. This analyses aims to examine and represent the economical and social factors that forced thousands to leave their homes and their efforts and willingness to retain their Hungarian culture despite of facing great odds. One question that must be asked is, to what extent did Hungarian-Americans manage to keep their Hungarian identity, and regain their national pride under the pressures of the early 20th century, in regards to the promotion of assimilation and under the pressure of the harsh discrimination they were subjected to.
