Biological therapy is a relatively new form of treatments. Many different therapeutic approaches can be cathegorized as biologics and many new agents may be classified unto them. Immunologic diseases, like IBD are getting more frequent and form a significant challenge for modern medicine. The objective of this thesis was to encompass a comprehensive review of IBD, one of the most common autoimmune disorders, with special regards to its treatment with biologics. Discussed will be among other things: biologics used, the most common ones in detail, but experimentals too; their nomenclature, possibilities, resuls, studies, side effects, economy and dosage; as will be conventional and surgical therapy and the basics of the disease in which’s mirror biologics are explored here. The most common, widely used form of biologics in IBD are antibodies against TNF-α. The molecule’s physiological function and the benefits of this intervention also form part of this work. And finally an outlook of the author on the future of biologics will be presented.
