The Housewife of the 1950s and 'the Problem that has no Name'

Abstract

My goal in this thesis is to understand how this role and image of housewifery in the 1950s evolved for middle-class women in the United States and how these trends were influenced by historical and social changes in the first half of the twentieth century. I also analyze Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminine Mystique, and introduce the problems that housewives had to face in post-war America.
