In my thesis, I elaborate on the different techniques used in the series adaptation of Sally Roney’s novel Normal People (directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie MacDonald, 2020), a twelve-episode coproduction between the American streaming service Hulu and the BBC in association with Screen Ireland, from the perspective of how they depict the changing mental states of the two main characters, Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) and their special relationship. I argue that the most remarkable techniques of portrayal are music and sound effects; visuals composition, camera angles, and lightning; character building and costume design; as well as the construction of the characters’ family backgrounds. With the help of these aspects, I compare the representation of the male and female character’s mental health.
