Ayahuasca's unique combination of psychoactive substances, including β-carboline alkaloids and DMT, can cause remarkable changes in consciousness and perception, potentially facilitating therapeutic processes including emotional processing, insight, and spiritual discovery. Ayahuasca's pharmacological effects are primarily mediated by its actions on the serotonin system, which include serotonin receptor agonism and monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibition, resulting in increased synaptic levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. Alternative pharmaceutical research continues to be conducted in regards to psychiatric disorder alleviation to combat issues with treatment resistance and improve overall patient outcomes. Given the limitations of present strategies for managing psychiatric diseases, it is critical to investigate alternative pharmaceutical therapies. With advancements in other psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies, there is no doubt in the powerful potential Ayahuasca holds in the management of psychiatric diseases, specifically in psychotherapy, as evidenced by several research. Despite limitations, it is a promising avenue for psychotherapy study, offering unique opportunities for healing while also modifying consciousness to facilitate transformation and self-discovery.
