Designing a Residential Family Building in Bauchi, Nigeria using  Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language

Absztrakt

This project showcases the design of a simple residential structure in Bauchi, Nigeria, which was informed by the Pattern Language concepts proposed by Christopher Alexander. Creating a living environment that promotes peace, well-being, and a strong sense of belonging within the local cultural context is the aim of this design. The diversified society and rich cultural heritage of Bauchi made it an exceptional setting for our project. In order to accommodate the requirements of the incoming residents while respecting the cultural legacy, the design included many essential patterns from Alexander's Pattern Language: Good Outdoor Space: The weather in Bauchi makes outdoor living possible. By creating outdoor areas that smoothly mix with the inside and offer chances for social contact and connection to nature, this pattern was included. Adaptation to the Desert: The design incorporates techniques for climate adaptation, such as cross-ventilation, shading, and the use of locally available materials for thermal comfort, in light of Bauchi's semi-arid environment. Cultural Aesthetics: Bauchi's unique cultural character was embraced by taking into account the local architectural aesthetics and materials. The local customs and values are honored and respected in the design. In order to make sure the project was in line with the prospective inhabitants' social and cultural values, the design process required working with them and interacting with local artisans. It also took into account environmentally friendly and locally economically viable building techniques and materials. This design language pattern revolves around using entities which are called “Patterns.” Inspired by Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language, this residential simple family home in Bauchi, Nigeria, is a representation of a living environment that puts the well-being of its inhabitants first, acknowledges regional customs, and incorporates in with the surroundings. Utilizing these patterns, the program aspires to establish an environment where individuals can grow in every aspect of their lives and feel deeply a part of it.
