dc.description.abstractInflammatory bowel disease is a lifelong condition with no available curative treatment in which it has shown over the past decade a rise in the incidence and mortality rates. With the addition of disease and economic burden, this further emphasizes the importance of an urgent and coordinated action in order to prevent complications, improve the quality of life of affected individuals and to also manage the inflammation. Pharmacotherapy, the most important factor when it comes to managing inflammatory bowel disease, allows for a more targeted and personalized approach while attempting to reduce potential side effects and minimizing the impact of the disease. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to discuss current pharmacological management as well as emerging drugs in inflammatory bowel disease and possible future directions.
