In my thesis I intend to focus on the issues concerning freedom, independence and femininity within the context of black communities. Since the sense of self is inseparable from the concept of community, especially in the case of the African-American society, a double perspective is essential for examining these questions. Accordingly, the characteristics and development of an independent, authentic self must be analyzed from its relation to other individuals and to a whole community from which individuality is excluded.
