dc.description.abstractThe aim of this thesis, 'Taking Risks with Warmth and Humour: Lisa McGee's Derry Girls,' is to examine the risks the sitcom takes in its portrayal of 1990s Northern Ireland. The series is set during the socio-political conflict, known as the Troubles, in Derry/Londonderry. McGee, the writer-creator of the show, breaks from the cliché narratives that only focus on the violence, and instead, she prioritizes the lives of the ordinary people. Derry Girls follows the everyday lives of five teenagers: Erin, Orla, Michelle, James, and Clare. The three seasons of his coming-of-age series portray the political violence of the Troubles, the peace process, and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. This thesis examines the unconventional mode of representing political issues, religion, and social issues in 20th-century Northern Ireland, employing warmth and humour.
