dc.description.abstractThis thesis explores the transformation of Barbie from a controversial fashion doll to a symbol of feminist discourse, particularly in light of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) film. It begins by critiquing Barbie’s historically unrealistic body proportions and their detrimental impact on young girls’ body image, extending the discussion to similar pressures faced by boys through action figures. The study then examines how Barbie has been rebranded in recent years to reflect more inclusive ideals and how Gerwig’s film confronts postfeminist ideologies by highlighting persistent gender inequalities. Through analysis of key characters—Barbie, Ken, and Gloria—the thesis argues that the film gives voice to modern womanhood's complex, contradictory realities. Ultimately, Barbie’s evolution is framed as a journey from an idealized object to an empowered individual, reinforcing the doll’s relevance in contemporary feminist thought.
