This dissertation confronts the collapse of aquatic ecosystems, arguing the failure stems from a conservation paradigm that marginalizes Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). Across four studies in the Philippines, I reveal a Disappearing Effect that renders Global South science invisible; link this to the Expert’s Grief, a measurable sorrow tracking a fishery's trophic collapse; validate TEK as a rigorous tool for quantifying the decline of key bioindicators, and show how this knowledge is embedded in the informal governance needed to rebuild the Crumbling Banks of a failing social-ecological system.

A disszertáció a hagyományos ökológiai tudás szerepét és jelentőségét vizsgálja és rámutat, hogy a hagyományos ökológiai tudás ignorálása jelentős mértékben hozzájárul a konzervációs erőfeszítések kudarcához. A konkrét elemzések a Fülöp-szigetek édesvízi halászatának esetében vizsgálja a hagyományos ökológiai tudás szerepét és jelentőségét a biodiverzitás megőrzésében.
