The Victorian fin-de-siecle is a very distinct era in British history and literature as well. The French term fin-de-siecle means the ’end of the century’ and has no exact English equivalent. At the end of the 19th century England was still a major power but many changes were approaching English society. England was a stable and wealthy country, having its wealth from its colonies, especially India. Although it seemed stable from the outside, it was beset by many problems inside. There were huge masses of poor people living in the cities, who were considered to be a threat to social stability. Women were trying to gain more recognition and more influence over their own lifes. The whole society was changing and it was not easy to accept this. Most people feared these changes and repressed these fears. These late Victorian anxieties included ”the retrenchment of empire, the spread of urban slums, the growth of ”criminal” classes, the proliferation of ”deviant” sexualities [and] the rise of decadent art”...
