In the recent history of medical research, after several decades of dormancy, hallucinogens have regained their former status of being an object of interest for clinical research. Scientists view them as a powerful tool for gaining new insights about the human brain and the nature of consciousness itself, but also acknowledge their potential in the treatment of various pathologies like addiction, depression and anxiety. This paper aims to give the reader a brief overview about the unique history of human hallucinogen use, as well as an understanding of the characteristics of the most important compounds belonging to this classhu_HU
