In my thesis, I would like to examine the English language from a closer point of view and to show some aspects of its everyday use. To do this, I chose a film entitled What a Girl Wants directed by Dennie Gordon. This film contrasts American and British English, then, there is a contrast between standard and non-standard language and male-female language usage. What is more, the text can be analysed from pragmatic and stylistic point of view, too. After presenting the text from a structural perspective, I enumerate some pragmatic concepts, like the most influential theories of Austin, Grice, Leech and Brown and Levinson, touching the phenomenon of different levels of meaning, the Cooperative Principle, conversational implicature and the significance of politeness in everyday language use. In a second part, I want to examine language as it builds up a character's identity, how it defines his/her origin, age and gender. Then, I try to justify the theoretical points by giving examples of the enumerated phenomena from real life.hu_HU
