Autoimmune bullous dermatoses are heterogeneous, chronic skin diseases, characterized by abnormal immune system response, as marked by the generation of autoantibodies, which subsequently lead to the development of blisters on the skin and/or mucous membranes. This literature review aims to discuss the four classic autoimmune bullous dermatoses: pemphigus, pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis, and epidermolysis bullosa, exploring their underlying pathomechanisms and the clinical trajectory of the various diseases. Additionally, it will cover the various diagnostic procedures used in identifying and differentiating these conditions, such as clinical examination, anamnesis, blood tests, skin biopsy (with routine staining techniques, and immunofluorescence), ELISA. Furthermore, the review will address the current treatment plans which are immunosuppressive medications and corticosteroids, and the recent advancements in treatment strategies, with the use of intravenous immunoglobulin and biologics. It will also emphasize the importance of managing triggers and maintaining proper skincare practices to alleviate symptoms and prevent future flare-ups.
