| dc.description.abstract | Between 1945 and 1989, Hungary’s position in international politics was determined by superpower politics, and not by her own.In the détente period, the United States tied the improvement of economic relations to normalization. The former was crucial for Hungary, but the economic interests were overwritten by political considerations. The final decision in every important question was made by János Kádár, General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, but only after the approval of the Soviet Union.Thus, the Hungarian-American relationship was mostly dependent on the state of Soviet-American relations. As the tensions decreased between the two blocks during the period of détente, between 1968-1978, all major bilateral questions between the United States and Hungary were resolved. In the same period, Hungary managed to avert the obstacles from accession, and in 1982, finally could join the International Monetary Fund. In my thesis, I am going to write about how the Hungarian-American economic and political relationship were intertwined, but were also determined by the Cold War situation, by Hungary being the member of the Soviet block. | hu_HU |
