The purpose of the present thesis is twofold: partly it aims to provide a brief picture of twentieth-century United States from a political, world-historical and cultural point of view while highlighting the different feminist movements of the period. Next, partly it attempts to present the different women stereotypes that have evolved and to introduce the era’s presidential wife or First Lady, whose personality and actions will then be compared to the female stereotype of that specific period.
