A Mailáth család 17. és 19. század között élt családtagjairól rövidebb életrajzi munkák már napvilágot láttak, azonban a Mailáth nemzetség józsefi ágának viszonylag teljes történetének bemutatására mindezidáig nem került sor. Ez azért is meglepő, hiszen a család tagjai, tudásuk és műveltségük által nagyon hamar felemelkedtek az arisztokrácia köreibe, emellett pedig a Magyar Királyságban is meghatározó szerepet betöltő, az ország irányításában is fontos tisztségekhez jutottak. Értekezésünk célja, hogy egy igazán sikeres és tehetséges, eddigi kutatásaink fényében egy alacsonyabb társadalmi csoportból feltörekvő, nagy ívű karriereket befutó famíliának a bemutatása, nevezetesen a Mailáth család életének főbb mozzanatainak reprezentálása. Minden család őriz valamilyen históriát. Ezeket a történeteket az egyéni életutak, sorsok, sőt néha csalódások alakítják. Nem volt ez másként a Mailáth család történetében sem. Értekezésünk három tudományos kérdéskört céloz meg; Elsőként arra teszünk kísérletet, hogy bemutatjuk a Mailáth család első ismert ősét, Mailáth Miklóst és utódainak életrajzi adatait. Bemutatjuk az ősapa, Mailáth Miklós birtokait, fontosabb ügyeit és bevételeit. Fiai, Mailáth Tamás és Boldizsár életútja a bemutatott rövid életrajzaik által tükrözik a korszak nemesi társadalmának főbb irányvonalait. Mindemellett kitértünk Mailáth Klára életrajzi adataira is, aki elsőként szerzett bárói rangot felmenői között. Az életrajzok bemutatását követően a Mailáth család első generációja házassági stratégiájának alakulását vizsgáltuk meg. Dolgozatunk második nagyobb terjedelmű részét a Mailáth család józsefi ágának bemutatására szenteltük. Mailáth II. József a grófi cím megalapozója lesz, karizmatikus személyisége által még impozánsabb karrierutat jár be, mint felmenői, nevezetesen dédapja, Mailáth Miklós. Másodszor igyekszünk a józsefi ághoz kapcsolódó családtagok birtokviszonyait és kapcsolati hálóját végig nyomon követni a 17. és a 19. század során. Női élettörténetek is helyt kaptak dolgozatunkban. Elsőként Mailáth Angelika grófnő hajadon életének momentumai és Mailáth Mária özvegyi éveinek nehézségei mind-mind gazdagítják az egyéni sorsok történetét.
Mindezek után bemutattuk a családtagok 17. és 19. század során kötött házasságait, röviden elemezve a rokon családokat. Utolsó sorban pedig ismertettük a Mailáthok Zemplén vármegyében betöltött szerepét, a legnagyobb Mailáth-domínium létrejöttének körülményeit. / Our thesis aims to present a genuinely successful and talented family, which, in the light of my research, emerged from a lower social group and had a very distinguished career the life of the Mailáth family. Of course, every family has a history, and a family's history is shaped by an individual's journeys, destinies and disappointments. And this was no different for the Mailáth family. Shorter biographies of the members of the Mailáth family who lived between the 17th and 19th centuries have already come to light. However, a relatively complete history of the family has not yet been presented. This is surprising since the family members, through their knowledge and education, rose very quickly to the ranks of the aristocracy and to positions of importance in the Kingdom of Hungary, which were also crucial in the country's governance. Our thesis aims at three scientific questions; First, we will try to present the biographical data of the first known ancestor of the Mailáth family, Miklós Mailáth, and his descendants. We present the estates, important affairs and income of the ancestor, Miklós Mailáth. His sons, Tamás Mailáth and Boldizsár Mailáth, reflect the main tendencies of the noble society of the time through their brief biographies. In addition, we covered the biographical data of Klára Mailáth, who was the first of her ancestors to reach the rank of baron. After presenting the biographies, we examined the evolution of the marriage strategy of the first generation of the Mailáth family. The second, larger part of our thesis was devoted to the presentation of the Józsefi branch of the Mailáth family. Mailáth II. József will be the founder of the title of count, who, due to his charismatic personality, will follow a more impressive life path than his ancestors, his great-grandfather, Miklós Mailáth. Secondly, we try to trace the property relations and network of relationships of the family members connected to the Józsefi branch between the 17th and 19th centuries. We also accepted women's life stories in our thesis. Above all, the moments of Countess Angelika Mailáth's unmarried life and the difficulties of Mária Mailáth's widowed years all enrich the history of individual destinies. And last but not least, we explained the role of the Mailáth’s in Zemplén County, the circumstances of the creation of the largest Mailáth domain.
