Reports of polymer induced allergy in Dentistry is on the rise since there has been increased use of polymer dental materials. Type 1 hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis and type IV hypersensitivity reactions such as contact stomatitis, contact dermatitis and cheilitis are the common polymer induced allergies reported. Methylmethacrylate and 2-HEMA are the most common monomers reported to trigger polymer allergy due to unpolymerized, residual monomers. Proper polymerization, finishing and polishing techniques as well as use of alternative materials are recommended ways to prevent polymer allergy. Corticosteroids, anntihistamines and chlorpheniramine are documented as possible treatment options. Dental professionals are advised to use adequate protective clothing and apply caution when handling polymer materials.
