The effect of epicatechin on the proliferation of uveal melanoma cells

Epicatechin is a secondary plant metabolite, which is a part of the flavonoid family and is abundant in many fruits, cocoa, and tea. This substance is well-known for its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and became a topic of interest in cancer clinical studies. This polyphenol compound possesses a unique structure, which contributes to its action mechanism and can affect signaling pathways in cancerous cells. This thesis research focused on how different epicatechin concentrations affected the cell survival of the OCM-3 uveal melanoma cell line. Multiple research techniques such as indirect immunofluorescence labeling, MTT assay, Western Blotting, and t-test were utilized to observe how proteins such as Akt were affected by epicatechin. A decrease in essential proteins was observed, which makes epicatechin a promising agent for treating eye cancer.
