The consumption and creation of pornography destroy the lives of many characters in the HBO series Euphoria. My thesis attempts to unfold and identify the harmful effects that are associated with the character’s generating and consuming of pornographic content. The series depicts pornography as damaging to the family unit. Sexual confusion and psychological aggression are inherited from father to son through pornography, which allows for emotionally and physically abusive behavior, destroying the romantic relationship of the son in the process. I examine the legal consequences of child pornography production and discuss various instances when nonconsensual pornography has occurred. I explore the impact of pornography on the everyday life of characters, and the way the creation of pornography infiltrates all aspects of their lives. Pornography distorts others’ perceptions, but it also impairs self-concept because sexual objectification induces self-sexualizing behavior that leads to self-objectification. I also consider some of the positive aspects associated with pornography: it can normalize different body types, and provide sexual confidence.
