This thesis explores the role of ceramide metabolism in Parkinson’s disease (PD), highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target. Ceramides, crucial for various cellular processes and cell signaling, may contribute to PD progression when their metabolism is altered. The research discusses how alterations in specific genes linked to ceramide metabolism could be associated with familial PD cases. Additionally, the potential therapeutic benefits of ambroxol, a cough suppressant, in reducing α-synuclein concentrations are examined. This study suggests that targeting ceramide metabolism could lead to novel treatments for PD, although further research is needed to fully understand the underlying molecular mechanisms.
