Growing global energy demand, spurred by societal and economic progress, necessitates a focus on sustainable energy solutions. Electricity consumption is rising, particularly in developing nations, demanding significant infrastructure investment. While fossil fuels dominate, environmental and security concerns are pushing a transition to renewables like solar, wind, and geothermal, while nuclear power faces safety and cost hurdles. A promising emerging field is hygroelectricity, generating power from ambient moisture using devices like HEGs and HGPGs. HGPGs function by leveraging humidity gradients to drive charged species across specialized materials, though current power output lags behind conventional batteries, and the continuous generation mechanisms are still under investigation. Research into HGPGs explores various materials and configurations, with in-thickness designs currently showing higher power density, and ongoing efforts focus on structural improvements and material enhancements to boost performance.
