Acute myocardial infarction is one of the most common diagnoses in hospitalized patients worldwide. The early mortality rate from AMI is approximately 30%, with more than half of these deaths occurring before the patients could reach the hospital. Ischemic heart disease causes more deaths and disability than any other illness in the developed world. Patients with ischemic heart disease fall into two groups: patients with chronic coronary artery disease who present usually stable angina and patients with acute coronary syndromes.
