Absztrakt

Bullying is a severe issue among adolescents in the United States. It can have serious consequences for the victim, but the bully can suffer as well. The media is a powerful influencer of behavior, and the representation of bullying is a common theme in movies. However, films may not always offer realistic portrayals and acceptable tools to handle bullying. Children and teenagers should be cautious of what they see and incorporate into their systems of values. Mean Girls (2004) and Bully (2018) offer the perspective of both the bully and the victim, but neither provides appropriate solutions to dealing with and recognizing a bully. In my thesis, I illustrate how the two movies approach bullying, how they provide a false image of the phenomenon, and analyze the role of gender and adults in this significant issue.
