Occurrence of periodontal disease in sheep, clinical characterization and investigation of breed and pregnancy as risk factors

| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to characterize and identify two potential risk factors associated with sheep periodontal disease (PD) development, as well as perform the clinical characterization of this disease in the herd. It was evaluated 110 sheep from the research farm of the University of Debrecen, 55 of the Dorper breed, and 55 of the Cigaja breed. In addition to the division by breed, after gestational diagnosis, the ewes were divided into two groups according to their reproductive status, pregnant and empty. For clinical characterization, a score between 0-3 was assigned for indicators such as gingival recession, dental wear, biofilm adherence, and gingival INDEX. In the result of the oral cavity evaluation, it was possible to observe that all indicators were present in the herd, with a low prevalence and in mild to moderate degrees. Statistical analysis showed that the presence of periodontal disease was more prevalent in the Cigaja breed than in the Dorper breed, with no significant higher incidence of PD during gestation. Further research with different breeds and different gestation stages is needed to elucidate the association of this potential risk factor with periodontal disease in sheep and define its effects on production, systemic health, and animal welfare. | hu_HU |
