This thesis will examine the causes and consequences of these changing family values and demography of America’s families through the representation of this phenomenon as portrayed in American television entertainment, in particularly in popular American sitcoms. In the first part, I examine the major causes of change of family values which led to the change in the institution of the family in America. The signs of the disintegration of the family such as: divorce and its consequences; shifting social norms; and the changing of other social forms (e.g. religion, workplace, etc.) are also in the center of this part of my study. The second part of my thesis is about the examination of popular American sitcoms as they portray the so-called “normal”, “traditional” family but most of all, paying the greatest attention to the appearance of the consequences of the breakdown of the family in these television entertainment products. The emphasis is going to be on the various representation kinds of the changes in family norms and structures and also on the moral lessons they want to highlight to us and call our attention to. The originality of the subject of my thesis is my idea of reflecting the dramatically changed new social phenomena on the world of popular American sitcoms.
