The aim of this thesis is to show how these movies break with Western narrative strategies that were commonly used in cinema in early 21st century to portray ageing characters and intergenerational relationships. This is emphasised by certain situations of conflict, such as parenting, care, gender, and autonomy. The films help construct a new discourse about old age relationships and care, which break with harmful and ageist stereotypes.
