The role of teaching vocabulary, similarly to that of grammar, has undergone significant changes in the past century; it was over-emphasized or neglected completely, in harmony with the current trends in applied linguistics and methodology. It is the purpose of this thesis to show the values and shortcomings of different alternatives in teaching and testing vocabulary.
