Even so I would like to point out in my thesis that Atonement is rather a novel of trauma than the novel of love. In virtue of the title “atonement” it may seem obvious but the structure is not as simple as that. A lot of characters, plots and stories are represented which makes the novel more complex. I argue that nearly every character, episode, phase and layer of the book is in connection with trauma. Atonement is not only about Briony’s sin and suffering but the trauma in every characters life. The novel represents plenty of obvious and hidden traumas.
