The choice of contraception in women with epilepsy is influenced by several factors, most especially the type of antiepileptic drug administered to patient, also the choice of antiepileptic drug to be administered depends on the type of contraceptive drug which is currently used by the patient. This is simply because there is a drug- drug interaction between hormones in contraceptive and the antiepileptic drug which can lead to serious adverse effects in the patient as well as increase the risk of seizure outbreak in these patients. Furthermore, the use of certain antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy can result in serious adverse effect to both the neonate and the mother as well. These include congenital defects (like neural tube defects, cardiovascular defects etc), weight gain in the mother, increased risk of PCOS and hormonal imbalance (e.g., amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea). Moreover, there are adverse effects associated with the use of contraceptives which includes weight gain, increased risk of seizure which result from contraceptive-AED interaction, increased risk of thromboembolism and well as increase risk of hypertension in these women.hu_HU
