In recent years the treatment of lung cancer has drastically changed due to the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Previously the treatment for lung cancer was based on chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical resection, with rather poor therapeutic effectiveness. A large number of clinical trials have shown that immune checkpoint inhibitors used alone or with other treatment methods significantly improve patient outcomes compared to traditional therapeutic modalities. Immune checkpoint inhibitors offer safer and more effective treatment options for many lung cancer patients and offer hope for further advancements in the treatment of lung cancer. In this review I aim to describe the clinical effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors in treatment of lung cancer based on patient outcomes from recent clinical trials.
