This thesis analyses how Anna Sewell portrayed horses in her novel Black Beauty and how she helps change people’s perspectives on animals. Intentional and unintentional animal abuse was not only present in the 19th century, it is still a major problem today which is need to solve. Unintentional animal abuse is due to a lot of misinformation, carelessness and negligence and Anna Sewell was one of the people who recognised this. She hoped to be able to open people’s eyes and create a better world for animals with her novel Black Beauty. Its goal has only been partially achieved, so animal abuse is still a significant problem today and the message of the narrative is still relevant. Black Beauty would be a good tool for people to realise that animals are sentient beings, and that it is not always good for them what we think. Anna Sewell represents this very well, as it demonstrates not only the wrong but also the right treatment of animals, and thanks to animal-centered narration, it becomes clear that animals also have feelings. In my thesis, I analyse how different treatments of animals and animal abuses are depicted in the narrative. I also make a brief detour on the history of the relationship between horse and man and on the literary significance of horses, as well. At the end of the thesis, I demonstrate different interpretations of the story and I discuss the possible effects these may have on Anna Sewell’s original purpose.hu_HU
