This study examined the impacts of water retention substances on early development of maize at the university of Debrecen, in a green house. The experiment was carried out in pots with varying growing media such as clay soil, humic sandy loam and mixtures of each type of soil with perlite. The treatments included Water Retainer (WR) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) application to determine the effects of the two substances on soil moisture condition and the performance of plants under different water conditions. Fertilizer used was NPK fertilizer and poultry manure compost tea which was used to supply nutrients. The growth and physiological parameters were recorded that included height of the plant, number of leaves, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, water potential and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm and Fv/F 0 ). The findings indicated that WR application had a significant beneficial effect on soil water retention, chlorophyll fluorescence and general an increase in plant growth, especially in light-textured soils. PEG treatments created significant water stress resulting in a decrease in photosynthetic activity and biomass accretion. In general, the experiment showed that Water Retainer is useful to reduce drought stress and enhance the growth and physiological functioning of maize in different soils.
