Pharmacological management of Parkinson’s Disease
Absztrakt
The aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis of Parkinson disease and currently available and newly researched pharmacological options.Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motoric system, commonly represented in the elderly and characterized by muscle rigidity, bradykinesia and resting tremors. The diagnosis of PD includes mostly clinical features and may require exclusion diagnosis. PD affects many people around the world and it has been graded the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Due to ever increasing population and extended life expectancy, PD prevalence is increasing and is expected to more than double in number before 2040. Currently traditional treatments options provide PD patients with mostly symptomatic relief and provides little effect on disease progression. Multiple studies have and are being conducted into possible disease modifying options but viable and sustainable treatment options remain mostly unknown.
