The role Fibrinogen plays in Postpartum Hemorrhage is a subject that has been discussed for many years. As of today fibrinogen is considered the sole indicator of severe postpartum hemorrhage. Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of mortality in pregnant woman. Many studies were done in order to understand the risk factors, causes and treatment for postpartum hemorrhage. Due to modern technology and an increased understanding of the causes and risk factors leading to severe postpartum hemorrhage, we are able to control and treat, diagnosed postpartum hemorrhage patients better than in the past, by reducing the blood loss and preparing the staff and operation room with the adequate training and instruments. With increasing research related to postpartum hemorrhage, Fibrinogen has been a leading marker in the diagnosis of postpartum hemorrhage. In this Thesis, the definition, epidemiology, cause and risk factors of postpartum hemorrhage are presented. In addition hemostasis and coagulation are explained in order to understand the underlying cause which can lead to postpartum hemorrhage. Lastly the connection between fibrinogen concentration and postpartum hemorrhage are presented, demonstrating the latest research which try to prove that fibrinogen concentrations are an indication of postpartum hemorrhage and progression to severe postpartum hemorrhage. The treatment options that are available are also presented, although there is still no clear cut protocol in place.
