Different anticoagulants are given depending on many factors. usually warfarin is preferred in long term treatment specially if there is atrial fibrillation or prosthetic vavlve, if not direct thrombin inhibitor or factor Xa inhibitor can be given instead. In case of thrombus treatment heparin is used followed by any of the previously mentioned anticoagulants. Heparin is also used in case of venous thrombosis prevention.
