Nowadays there is a growing rate of interest towards sustainable and affordable electric cars from the global consumer society. The main objective of this study is to execute a comparative analysis between the currently available car models operating with fossil fuel and electricity. As a result of the executed comparative analysis, I came to the conclusion that although a certain level of improvement has begun by means of the drivetrain and production technology of electric cars, unfortunately their level of sustainibility and profitability still have not reached a level where they could be considered as favorable for the vast majority of the population. The economic evaluation of electric cars from the perspective of the middle class shows that the retail price of electric models are still too high to be operated favorably. On the other hand the price gap between the retail price of luxurious cars operating with different types of energy can be significantly smaller, or even zero in some cases. As long as the technology used during the production of batteries does not improve in a reasonable spectrum, or the retail price does not descend significantly operating an electric car cannot be considered as an obviously sustainable substitute.

Napjaink globális fogyasztói társadalma által egyre nagyobb igény mutatkozik fenntartható és megfizethető elektromos autók iránt. Jelen tanulmány legfőbb célja, hogy komparatív analízist végezzen a fogyasztók számára jelenleg elérhető elektromos és fosszilis energiával meghajtott autómodellek tekintetében. A tanulmány során elvégzett komparatív analízis eredményeképp megállapítható, hogy az utóbbi évtizedben hiába indult el egyfajta fejlődés mind az elektromos autók meghajtása, mind a gyártási technológiájuk tekintetében, sajnálatos módon a fenntarthatóságuk továbbra sem kedvező a népesség döntő hányadát alkotó szegmentum számára. A társadalmi középosztály részét képező fogyasztók értékelése alapján az elektromos autók átlagos beszerzési ára továbbra is túl magas ahhoz, hogy gazdaságilag jövedelmező legyen üzemeltetni őket, ugyanakkor a luxusautók kategóriájában a beszerzéskori árkülönbség eltörpülhet, akár teljes mértékben meg is szűnhet. Amíg az elektromos autók körében használatos akkumulátor-gyártási technológia nem fejlődik jelentős mértékben, illetve a gépjárművek beszerzéskori ára nem csökken le szignifikánsan, addig nem tekinthető az elektromos autózás minden szegmentum számára egyértelműen fenntartható alternatívának.
