Breast reconstruction is available for all women following either breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. When choosing the best method of breast reconstruction for a patient, many things need to be considered. If the reconstruction is unilateral, how does the healthy, contralateral breast look like? Is it large so an autologous tissue would be the best choice? Is an implant needed as well for the increased bulk of the reconstructed breast? Is the healthy breast ptotic, which renders the implant-based reconstruction an impossible choice? Does the patient have any history of previous abdominal surgeries or wishes to become pregnant in the future, making the autologous abdominal flap, not a good option? Detailed history and physical examination are therefore needed since each breast reconstruction needs to be addressed in an individualized manner.
