This paper is dedicated to examining the way Disney animated movies Coco and Encanto explore the rather heavy topic of transgenerational trauma. Both movies were inspected through the combined lenses of transgenerational trauma and familism to convey how the coexistence of these two phenomena reinforces one another. I was interested in how the personal struggles of members of the younger generations can be traced back to direct effects of traumatic events happening in the past through examining the source of trauma, its effects on the families and individual members, and how the cycle of transgenerational trauma was broken. These movies depict how the traumatic experiences of members of the older generations, and their attachment to their values and beliefs, combined with the power they have over their families are the source of collective and individual struggles in the groups. Resolution is achievable by breaking the cycle of transgenerational trauma.
