Successful endodontic treatment requires thorough cleaning, shaping, and three-dimensional obturation of the root canal system to prevent reinfection and promote periapical healing. Root canal sealers are essential for achieving a hermetic seal; however, extrusion beyond the apical foramen is a relatively common clinical finding with potentially significant biological implications. This thesis presents a comprehensive literature review on the classification, properties, and clinical behavior of root canal sealers, with particular emphasis on the etiology, biological effects, and management of sealer extrusion. The findings indicate that extrusion is influenced by factors such as working length determination, canal anatomy, obturation technique, and material characteristics. Although small amounts of extruded sealer are often clinically tolerated, excessive extrusion may contribute to inflammation or delayed healing depending on the material used. Prevention through accurate clinical techniques and careful material handling is essential to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
