During the Second World War, several new weapons were introduced but the most significant one was the atomic bomb. It changed the image of war and influenced international relations. The story of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is known all over the world, however, not many people know the events that lead to the destruction of these cities. The principle aim of this thesis is to present the historical background of the most important events of the Second World War, focusing on the story behind the atomic bomb. I am also going to elaborate on how influential this nuclear weapon was, as it also determined the Cold War period and the competition between the Soviet Union and the United States.hu_HU
