dc.description.abstractThe following thesis is about Facebook and its effects on university students. It divided into three main parts: (1) what Facebook is, its history and how it became a world-wide popular social networking site; (2) What are the negative and positive effects of Facebook on students?; (3) an own research about the usage and impacts of Facebook in a particular group of students. In the first part, after getting the relevant general information about Web2.0 technologies and social networking systems, the reader gains an insight into the history of Facebook. The second biggest section is based a detailed lists of negative and positive effects of Facebook on university students. There are also some examples for those universities that tried to ban the use of Facebook on campus. Further on, I introduce the ‘National Standards for Foreign Language Education’ that can be found on Facebook. In addition, this section is going to introduce some ideas about why and in what manner Facebook could be part of education. Finally, the last section is an analysis of my own research: a questionnaire that focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook usage in the case of fifteen high school and fifteen university students. After all, the thesis is going to introduce one of the most popular social networking sites of today, and its effects on students, in the hope of making them conscious enough about its negative impacts, and its benefits, too.hu_HU
