Literature as a Tool in Handling Children's Grief and Its Depiction in Contemporary Fiction

| dc.description.abstract | In my thesis, I explore the way in which literature can help children in handling their grief resulting from several types of loss. These types include the loss of a parent, the quasi loss of an emotionally absent parental figure and the loss of a home. I analysed two contemporary novels (The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly and Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones) in order to see whether the use of literature as a coping tool in children’s grieving process is depicted accurately in novels that feature children experiencing grief and loss for the first time. I found that literature can help children handle loss in multiple ways. For one thing, it shows them the way in which fictional characters react to situations similar to their own, thus offering them a possible course of action to take. It can also provide a reason to try and cope with the loss instead of giving up and developing depression or suicidal thoughts. Lastly, it offers children a possible escape route from reality and from the problems resulting from the loss that they encounter. In both of the novels that I dealt with in my thesis, these trends and patterns, as well as the way that the protagonists of the narratives integrated them into their grieving process, were depicted accurately, giving readers a clear and genuine picture of the role that literature plays in grieving and acceptance. | hu_HU |
