My doctoral dissertation examines the relationships between landscape, spatial orientation, and the teaching of Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people] as an independent subject within public education. The aim of the research is to explore how this subject may contribute to the development of landscape knowledge, topographical knowledge, spatial thinking, and map-reading skills. Based on a sample from Debrecen, the empirical study also investigates what kinds of landscape-related knowledge and spatial orientation skills students studying Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people] possess. The theoretical starting point of the research is that landscape is one of the key concepts in the teaching of Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people]. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, it connects several academic fields, particularly ethnography and geography. In the dissertation, I review the origin of the concept of landscape, its related concepts, and its various interpretations. In this context, I examine the terminology of Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people] and the role of ethnographic landscapes in education. The document and content analysis covers landscape-related content in the National Core Curricula, Framework Curricula, and Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people] textbooks issued between 2012 and 2020. The analysis examines the representation of ethnographic regions, ethnic groups, historical and geographical knowledge, as well as the functions and usability of maps included in the textbooks. The findings indicate that the landscape-related content of the textbooks is diverse and complex, while the interpretation of ethnographic landscapes is fundamentally shaped by the perspective of ethnography. Teaching ethnographic landscapes may complement and reinforce landscape-related knowledge in geography and history education, thereby promoting closer cooperation between the subjects. The dissertation also addresses the issues of landscape names, regional classifications, and territorial delimitations. The differences between ethnographic and geographical interpretations of landscape are primarily reflected in specific naming practices, the diversity of landscape names, and different territorial divisions based on geographical, historical, and ethnographic perspectives. The analysis of scientific and educational terminology, as well as atlases, makes it possible to identify the differences and points of connection that are significant in the teaching of landscape. Within the framework of a case study conducted in Debrecen, the empirical research explores students’ landscape knowledge and topographical knowledge through questionnaires, eye-tracking research, and mental mapping. According to the findings, the landscape-related knowledge of the students examined is primarily general, visual, and emotional in nature. They experience difficulties in distinguishing between ethnographic and geographical landscapes, locating major regions beyond Hungary’s borders on maps, and spatially identifying the landscapes of Hungary and the Carpathian Basin, as well as neighbouring countries. The findings suggest that a considerable proportion of the participants do not apply conscious map-reading strategies and that their cartographic knowledge is incomplete. The research highlights the relationships between the teaching of ethnographic landscapes, topographical knowledge, and map-reading skills. Based on the findings, the dissertation formulates recommendations for the development of Hon- és népismeret [Our homeland and its people] education, with particular emphasis on strengthening landscape knowledge, spatial thinking, and map-reading skills.
