In this essay, after giving a short overview of the numerous definitions of proverb, I will present an analysis of English and Hungarian proverbs that form their messages relying on the well-known characteristic features of different domestic animals and I will draw a conclusion in terms of their modern use on the basis of English and Hungarian corpora.
