The purpose of my thesis is to explore some of the roots of historical trauma based on Leslie Marmon Silko's Gardens in the Dunes. I elaborate on those institutions and spaces that were either attacked or created by Western culture to assimilate American Indians in the novel. Last but not least, I discuss how some of the characters were able to resist with the help of their heritage.
