Rice husk, a by-product of rice production, may become a pollutant if not utilized. Instead of contributing to agricultural waste, it can be transformed into rice husk biochar, which is a novel material with combined adsorbent and soil amendment properties. Its adsorption capacity was analyzed using equilibrium models (Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms) and kinetic models. Its surface and composition were also analyzed to provide additional information on its adsorption mechanism. Lastly, a conceptual and theoretical assessment of its potential as a soil amendment that can also decrease ammonium nitrogen leaching through its adsorption capabilities were presented.
