The distribution of resultative expressions and verbal particles in Hungarian

| dc.description.abstract | I my thesis, I investigate the distribution of resultative expressions in Hungarian. Resultative expressions denote an endpoint, a result and refer to a new state of an event. Resultatives may be expressed by nominal resultatives or by verbal particles in Hungarian. Nominal resultatives and verbal particles occur both with transitive and intransitive verbs and these resultative expressions are usually in complementary distribution, i.e. it is either the nominal resultative or the verbal particle that appears in a structure. Nevertheless, there is data that suggest that the nominal resultative and the verbal particle are not always in complementary distribution in Hungarian, i.e. both of them may occur in one construction. On the basis of a corpus study I observed what factors may influence and license this structure. The factors that determine the acceptability of the construction are the position of the verbal particle and the nominal resultative, the semantic properties of the nominal resultative, and the type of the verbal predicate. It can be observed that the verbal particle and the nominal resultative are not completely in complementary distribution and the presence of both resultative expressions is possible. An explanation for this phenomenon is that the verbal particle and the nominal resultative do not have the same role and they occupy different structural positions when they co-occur in one construction. | hu_HU |
